Front and Backyard Landscape Design Ideas Inspired by a Home Remodel

Landscape design ideas for the front and back yards of this Boulder home were plentiful! After the remodel of this home the owners wanted their landscape to match.  They wanted to update the overall look of the landscape, create year round color in the garden, eliminate grass in the back yard, and create vegetable beds that could be maintained without having to bend over.

The landscape design was based around the idea for two raised vegetable planting beds. These were built with 8” Colorado Buff Strip Stone.  The raised vegetable beds were specified as 3’ tall to eliminate the need to bend over while planting, weeding or harvesting.  We then re-purposed some of their existing flagstone to create a small seating area in the shade of a mature ash tree.  This served as a great focal point from the kitchen window. It also created a great area to relax and enjoy the shade garden.

We then designed crushed granite pathways that linked the vegetable beds, flagstone patio, existing deck, and patio.  This path meanders through a densely planted perennial garden that provides year round color and interest.  We also planted a Catalpa tree on the west side of the yard that will provide shade to the rest of the backyard.

The final element of the design was a raised planter bed on the west side of the property that retained the slope and provided privacy from the neighbors.  In the front yard, we removed several overgrown shrubs and trees that were restricting access to the side yard.  We also reduced the amount of grass and added some border perennial gardens for color.
