On a Sunday in July about 2:30 I started for a walk to Trevorton Mountains for some huckleberries. This mountain is loaded with the early blue, the high blue, and a black huckleberry.

Going up the mountain road a young rabbit crossed in front of me. He was in no hurry and as he looked me over seemed to say, “I know you won’t hurt me, so I’ll just take my good old time to cross this road.”

About a half a mile farther a large gray squirrel scampered in front of me. He was there and then gone like a flash. A few feet farther on the storm which had been threatening all afternoon let loose with a heavy downpour. I hurried to a big pine tree and stood under its protecting branches until the rain ceased, then followed the road to the top of the mountain. There, the sun was shining brightly and birds singing all around me.

I left the road and started thru the woods picking huckleberries in every small clearing. All at once I spied a plant I had not seen for several years. It was Indian Pipe, also called Ghost-Flower, Ice-Plant, Corpse-Flower. Its botanical name is Monotropa Uniflora. Its preferred habitat is the heavily shaded, moist rich woods, especially under pine and oak trees. Its flowering season is June until August and takes me back to some of my favorite backyard designs. Its distribution is almost throughout North America. These plants on an average grow about four to ten inches high with several stalks to a clump. There were about thirty clumps and were the largest I have ever seen. One clump had thirteen scapes and was fourteen inches high.

I know this plant is a branded sinner because it is a ghoulish parasite, colorless in every part, waxy, cold and clammy, with no leaves, only scaly bracts. This pirate has no chlorophyll because it lives on juices of living plants or on decaying matter of dead ones. So by draining the already digested food of its neighbors it has lost its desire to seek food from the soil. To look at this weirdly beautiful plant, one would never think that it is related to some of our most beautiful flowers – the rhododendrons, the laurels, the azaleas. It s botanical name means a flower once turned, and, as if it realizes its wickedness, it turns black with shame after being picked.

It reminded me of an old Indian legend about Ghost Pipes. It seems that once upon a time a lot of Indian chiefs attended a council and alter ail the council affairs were settled, they knocked the ashes out of their pipes and departed. Next year the Ghost-Pipes came up where the chiefs emptied their pipes. As I gazed on the magnificent display around be I thought of this old legend and wondered how many chiefs had attended at this council.

I returned home with a pail full of huckleberries and very well pleased with my walk, even though 1 was slightly damp.

When applied to lilies, the word “strain” has evoked considerable comment from people accustomed to the term only in connection with flowers grown quickly from seed, such as annuals and certain perennials. Actually, the growing, selecting and introduction of a closely related group of plants is new only in its application to lilies. In short, a strain of hybrids, such as the Fiesta, Golden Chalice, or Olympic Hybrids, is the final result of hundreds of crosses among the various types.

When the seedlings flower, the hybridizer immediately discards all undesirable individuals, such as plants that are not an improvement over the parents. With the now greatly reduced number, the grower is faced with the problem of final selection, and this usually involves the virtually impossible task of picking the best three or four from among hundreds of outstanding specimens.

It was at this point that we broke away from traditional horticultural practices, (sort of like the artificial grass not being really horticulture) – and decided that, since each remaining plant was of each excellence, the entire group would be introduced as a strain of closely related plants, all of similar habit and form and possessed of a nice range of colors. Not only does this method of introduction result in immediate presentation of the new lilies to gardening America at a modest price, but it also permits the grower to constantly improve the strain by pollinating only the very best specimens each year and thus annually to advance the quality of the entire group.

Some of these strains are:

Bellingham Hybrids – This is essentially a continuation of the inter crossing of lilies originally developed by Dr. Griffith. The group is most valuable to the gardener because it combines the lovely colors and graceful forms of native American species with the ease of culture and handling of hybrids. These lilies are particularly outstanding for cut flower purposes and for naturalizing.

Centifoliiim Olympic Hybrids – Already available in quantity, these are a major improvement over L. regale. They flower later and are characterized by much larger, well-placed flowers varying in form from the long funnel-type trumpet to wide, bowl-shaped flowers resembling the shape of L. auratum. The attractive cream, yellow and wine shading has been intensified and, in many instances, the entire flower is flushed with color. A recent break has produced large centifolium flowers deeply stained fuchsia pink. Another form, scheduled for early introduction, has dark orange and apricot throats. The latter are among the latest flowering types of the trumpet class, coming into bloom about the same time as L. henryi.

Did you have one of those vacations this year that you would cherish all the more with a picture, using some of the dried materials gathered on such a trip? First, one must choose a suitable frame. A nice size is 12 x 14, although any size to your liking is permissible. If you are not the handy man around the house, have a box made the same size as your frame, using the frame for the cover. The box should be about the size of the glass on your frame and about two inches deep. The first step is to paint the inside of this box a suitable color, usually a sky blue. This background can then be used as the sky or blue water. However, one's imagination can guide one as to the color. A green is beautiful and cool.
Dried Pictures Bring Life is a post from: Online Landscape Designs

The still life could describe a memoir of a trip to Minnesota. Various shells were gathered along the lake shores. Mosses of various types. There was dock, the heads of wheat, some corkwood oak, a small pine cone, some acorns, stance and a few of the small milkweed pods. With some plaster of paris a shore line was made on the right hand side of the box. The mosses were lined up around the edge, with the various shells dotting the bottom of the box. Of course the hepa filters would remove any “virtual pollen” in the room.

A small canoe was made out of birch bark and moored to the plaster of paris shore line. To the left a grouping of the above dried materials was made, with the acorn and corkwood oak twip bringing the arrangement down to a focal point with a small plaster of paris squirrel tying in with the picture. After your picture is completed, fit it up to your frame and, taking some masking tape, fasten it in place: The picture is now ready to either hang in place or, placing a standard behind it, it may be placed on the mantel or other suitable place. The above still life won a blue ribbon in a flower show which had as one of its entries “Still Life Pictures.”

It is a fascinating hobby and preserves your materials from dust, pictures a story and will always draw comment.

Another still life that was of interest were various pines grouped to one side in front of a green background which would give you an idea of a dense forest background. To one side were small shrubs and in the far background a small deer peering through the trees.

A still life is intriguing both to the artist and to the onlooker. It is worth your while to try one!

One class of easily grown, popular lilies which has been somewhat neglected received the attention of George Slate of Geneva, New York. In addition to writing an excellent book, “Lilies for American Gardens,” years ago Mr. Slate found time to do some first class hybridizing.

Working with the upright-flowering, elegans-umbellatum types, Mr. Slate has produced some desirable improvements. Over the years writers were privileged to grow and observe a score of Mr. Slate’s selected seedlings. The bright, unspotted yellow and the vivid, non-fading red forms were outstanding. In addition to this class, Mr. Slate introduced the variety Seneca, an outward facing hybrid between L. tigrinum and L. leichtlini var. maximowiezi.

One of the greatest of all accomplishments in modern lily growing is the mass production of the most exotic of lilies, the L. auratum, the gold-banded lily, so bright and cheerful, sort of daytime natural landscape lighting.

Some sixty years ago Alwyne Buckley of British Columbia, Canada, sowed a quantity of seed and succeeded in maturing the largest single planting of this lily ever to be grown from seed. Mr. Buckley named his strain the Esperanza Auratums and the bulbs were available in the United States and Canada. His accomplishment is an outstanding example of the desirability and superior vigor and performance of well-grown domestic stock as compared to bulbs collected and imported from overseas.

Other new developments are under way at the Bulb Farms where, under the direction of many hybridizers, the breeding and growing of lilies has become a major project. With a planting of some 30 acres, it is, probably, the largest commercial garden lily planting in the world. There much has been done to change the pattern of varietal introduction by the production of strains which are essentially mixed – selected seedlings of similar or related types, usually of the same parentage.

One of the most effective ways to enrich your lifestyle plus add worth to your home is by making a beautiful and tranquil outdoor living area. This project does not have to involve massive cost, as with the addition of some basic garden design and outdoor furniture, any outside space may be improved. Here are some pointers that you should think about.

You can probably put in simple lv outside lights yourself – if you want truly dramatic lighting, using the services of an outdoors lighting professional is the ideal solution. These professionals should have plenty of knowledge of outdoor lighting installation, but there may be a good chance they have access to outdoor lights not normally available to everyone. The installation of extensive or luxury exterior lights might require appropriate training. Discovering an outdoor lighting designer and installer who can bring your landscaping alive whenever you like will make a beneficial addition to your home.

Arranging your garden with a instinct for design can enrich any garden, even the most uninteresting backyard. Taking pleasure in your outside area should be pretty much as important as enjoying inside your house. Sometimes the weather holds us back of course; all the more reason to enjoy it when we can. Take time to consider before spending tons of cash on garden buildings, water features, teak garden furniture, or landscape lighting. Will the item you fancy really enhance your outdoor space? Is it too bulky and overpowering for your compact garden, or is it too small and insignificant in your extensive wild outdoor space?

Choosing furniture for a summerhouse, gazebo or cabin depends a great deal on the use of the building and the construction method . For example, soft furnishings might get damp if kept in a wooden garden shed over winter weather although they would be perfectly dry and protected in a brick built, insulated building or summerhouse. Plastic or metal garden buildings have more complications of moisture build-up or condensation and extremes of temperature than those constructed of wood. Metal and plastic buildings can both get very hot and humid in the summer months and incredibly cold in winter so any fabric furnishings left in them can get damp and mildewed quickly. Metal or wooden yard furniture could be the best option although both have to be treated well to help them continue to be in good condition.

Trees and shrubs can be a beautiful element in any backyard, nevertheless occasionally they can end up damaged or diseased, creating a risk which could cause damage to your home or your neighbor’s property. Sometimes, they may present a blockage that has to be removed for garden buildings or some other garden projects. Although it can be tempting to simply cut down the problem tree yourself, the accidental destruction you could cause plus the chance of hurting yourself or others will make it worth the additional expense to employ a tree removal professional. Tree limbs have a great deal of weight to them and must be taken off before getting rid of a stump. To remove tall trees with high branches, it will very likely be necessary to use a vehicle which has a lifting platform to safely reach and do away with them. Usually, removing a large tree safely and securely will need more than one person. Professional tree experts can easily decide the most effective method for your particular predicament.

It is almost out of the question thinking about an attractive back garden while not imagining a luxurious green lawn. In fact this can be one of the most challenging factors to achieve. Why is it that many backyards showcase gorgeous green lawns, whilst in many others the greenery often is apparently losing out to ugly brown areas? Quite simply, all else being the exact same, the trick to getting a green lawn is in delivering sufficient nutrients, exercising reliable lawn weed control and pursuing the correct mowing schedule. First of all, forget any notion you have that grass is simply grass, and that’s all there’s to it. In reality, there’s far more to it than this. Gardeners grow various sorts of grass within their lawns, and different grasses have various growing needs. Quite a few factors go into the selection of a type of grass for any individual lawn. Among the fundamental conditions is the regional weather factors.

You can find some of the most innovative back yards and landscapes in places where people let their creativity run free. A desolate backyard or garden that has nothing interesting about it, can become the same one that attracts folks to the neighborhood simply to see it. Whatever gardening style, let yourself be led by the principles that lie beneath all garden designs. It is easy to ignore a number of of these key facts, then look at some other people’s garden designs and speculate, the reason why they look very much nicer than yours. Most likely, the solution to this question is in adherence to the principles of design. These thoroughly tested lessons are the cornerstones of the earth’s picture-perfect gardens.

There are pop up gazebos available to meet most party needs. You may also want to look into a garden pop up gazebo.

If you live in an area where winter is cold enough to create ice, you will have to bear this in mind when you construct your fish pond. How thick is ice normally in your region? In most cases, a ‘deep end’ of thirty to forty five inches should be ample, but you will have to take advice locally if you do not know the answer. A pet shop, a neighbour or the zoo can provide the necessary advice.

The other problem with winter and ice is that a layer of ice prevents noxious gases escaping and oxygen entering, as it would do in the usual cycle of events. Therefore, you will have to ensure that there is always a hole in the ice. However, smashing a hole will scare the fish.

There are several ways by which this air hole can be maintained under mild freezing conditions:

Aerator: a bubbler, can be placed in the pond. It has to be under water, obviously, and it has to be fairly vigorous, so that the bubbles keep breaking the ice above it. If it is put in water that is too shallow, it can freeze up too, so that is a consideration to be borne in mind.

De-icer: a mild, floating heater. This kind of device does not produce enough heat to threaten pond liners, but it is adequate to keep a small surface area ice free under most weather conditions.

Water pump: a pump pumping water at force through the surface can keep a breathing hole in your pond, but only under fairly mild icy conditions. The pump must be placed in deep water or it could freeze solid.

Hoola-Hoop: if the weather is only mildly icy, a hoola-hoop with a round football floating in its centre can be successful at preventing ice forming within the hoop. The wind keeps the ball moving within the hoop and ice does not get a chance to develop.

This hole in the ice is critical. Your fish will be semi-dormant in the winter and you may not see them for months, but they still need to breathe and excrete and the gases that that and the plants give off need to be allowed to escape or they will poison the water and kill your fish.

At this time of the year it is extremely important not to over-feed. Fish build up layers of fat during the summer and live off that fat during their semi-hibernation during the winter, but they do eat sometimes. The only problem for you is that you will not know which days they decide to come up for a nibble.

This is where the hoola-hoop can come in handy again. If you only feed within the hoola hoop, you can see how much food has been taken and how much has been left. Aspire to give no more than they will eat.

Is your kitchen or dining room table a repository for everything that people can not be bothered to put away? In between meals does it get piled up with the post, books, school bags, hats and shopping just because people are too idle to put things away?

A gorgeous looking table is a lovely sight, whether you prefer a highly polished surface or whether you like to see a tablecloth or a runner. Books, a hat, gloves and keys are certainly not the same.

This kind of mess is a bad practice because at some time or another, someone has to tidy it away and that someone is normally Mum and that sometime is usually just before she wants to set the dining table for a meal, precisely when she does not have the time to do it. Even when the clutter is tidied from the dining table, it usually only ends up somewhere else where it should not be.

If you can not bring to an end this bad habit by introducing some discipline into the members of your family, maybe you should try another line of attack. Fix two or three hooks per person into a board on the wall of your passageway so that people can hang things up as soon as they come in and attach bins to the wall with the names of the family members on them so that they can put small things in them that they have to have every day like keys.

People can get into the routine of putting their stuff in their own container and hanging up larger things. Furthermore, if you find something lying around where it should not be, you can drop it in the right person’s container. This should clear up clutter on the dining table practically over night.

The dining table probably also doubles as a desk for homework and work brought home from the office. This is not a problem so long as people clear their things away after them, which they all too often do not do. You can make it easier for people to tidy their work things from the dining table by having a cupboard close by just for these things.

Attempt to establish good habits early on in a child’s life by encouraging it to eat off plates at all times because it catches crumbs and by always placing drinks on mats because it does not leave rings on varnished table tops which only have to be rubbed out later.

Another means to deter family members from leaving items lying around on the table is to place a gorgeous runner or tablecloth on it. Then put a centre piece on the table too. This could be a bowl of fruit or a few photographs. If you use the table for dining, you could do what they do in hotels and lay the table with the cutlery for the next meal as soon as one meal is over. It saves you a job later on as well.

Many shrubs and vines provide spectacular displays of flowers that make a special appeal to beginning gardeners.

A Secondary Consideration

To the nurseryman who sells plants largely on the strength of their display value, flowers are all important. But to the landscape designer whose reputation and livelihood depend on how well satisfied the customer is with his landscape plans after they have been executed, the flower shrubs and vines do not mean much. He realizes that, on the majority of plants, they last for only a week or two, and the owner must enjoy the plant itself for the rest of the year. Therefore, he is more interested in form and texture than in flowers.

The novice garden maker should likewise try to control his emotions lest he sacrifice a pleasant year-round effect for the sake of a few weeks of spectacular flower display. That is why solar garden lights are an excellent addition to the landscape garden.

Valueless Plants

Fortunately, not many shrubs and vines that are popular because of their flowering habits are actually ugly after they finish flowering. But a few are practically useless as far as landscape value goes once their flowering period is over. Nevertheless, if you want such plants in your garden, use them where after they bloom, they will not have to play a major part in the design.

There are, for example, some species of Mockorange (Philadelphus) that for the average small home grounds are simply too large and overpowering. If kept pruned to a suitable size for such places, they are likely to become leggy at the bottom or extremely heavy at the top.

So if you insist on having one or two such plants in your garden for the sake of their flowers, it would be well to use them in the back of a shrub border; the tops would be seen and appreciated during the flowering season, and during the rest of the year the unsightly lower portion would be hidden by the shrubs in front of them.

Thomas Fryd shares his vast knowledge at . It is time to remove the clouds of doubt on the topic of solar garden lights.
The gems of the garden, Primulas are very hardy perennials, even in severe climates they seldom are killed in winter, but grow strong and healthy with deep green foliage, and year after year bloom and bloom with no extra care, fuss or bother.. In early spring they commence to bloom and soon the bed is a blaze of bright pretty color. They are beautiful when massed under shrubs, in the rock garden or by the pool. They always come in for their share of attention. They grow well in a cool semi-shady location well drained with plenty of water during blooming seasons - when planted in a mulchey bed of leaf mold, enriched with barn yard fertilizer, and some raw bone-meal they will be happy and bloom well. They always come in for their share of attention. They grow well in a cool semi-shady location well drained with plenty of water during blooming seasons – when planted in a mulchey bed of leaf mold, enriched with barn yard fertilizer, and some raw bone-meal they will be happy and bloom well. They do enjoy a little lime in the soil.

Every two or three years the large bunches should be dug and divided, wash off the roots and clip off the longest ones, gently pull apart into small divisions, cut the taps back to within 21/2 inches of the crowns and replant. Set firm, water and shade a few days if sun is hot and they will transplant very easy with no less. The best time to replant is just after the blooming season.

I have had a large bed of the Polyanthus circled with solar landscape lights, and Auricula Strains for years and they are very hardy with little winter protection. In this locality we almost always have early snow several inches of soft snow and a few ever green branches over them they come through our severe winters in fine shape. However, am I certain freezing ice and water in the crowns of plants are very hard on them. And do be careful that they are not smothered down with wet soggy leaves when weather starts freezing. They are seldom bothered with insects or pests, during the hot summer months. If h”tle or red spider anpear give a strong spray of water whorl the day is warm and when dried off a good dusting with a poison plant dust.

Do have yourself some primulas. Buy some plants or in early spring buy and sow some seed and soon you will have large hunches of bright beautiful flowers ranging in shades from pure white, lavender, rose, purple red, yellow and orange and many shades of blue. They bloom in clusters at the top of a stiff stem eight to ten inches high.

Try a few plants from a reliable grower. They multiply so fast, bloom early in spring, a pure double white ozon, a blue shade with yellow eye, Rob Roy a crimson red, gold star deep yellow with large orange eye, they are truly one of the loveliest flowers that grows.

If you have a beautiful garden, then you probably have a patio of a deck so that you can get every last scrap of enjoyment out of it. Most patio furniture is left outside for a lot of the year so it is best to get high quality garden patio furniture. High quality garden patio furniture is essential if you expect it to withstand the rigours of all kinds of weather and yet last a reasonable length of time too.

Another factor, particularly these days, is the ecology. People want to have as little impact on the ecology as possible, thereby reducing their carbon footprint, as they say. The manufacture of plastic involves polluting the atmosphere with more CFC’s and disposal can cause problems too. Plastic can take decades and decades to bio-degrade.

Metal patio garden furniture also has its issues. It has to be mined and fabricated and people are beginning to worry about robbing Mother Earth of her minerals, but at least old metal can be recycled. That leaves us with timber and especially hardwood. Before, there was a great deal of concern in almost every country about logging, but a lot of countries have the problem under control now after sustained pressure from the West.

Most people understand these days how important it is to look after our planet. There is even a special day to help people remember the Earth’s dire state called ‘Earth Day’. Using hardwood from replenishable sources is the best way to save our forests.

Garden furniture made from hardwood from a guaranteed sustainable source is the most ecological way out. If you maintain your hardwood furniture according to the manufacturer’s recommendations for the type of wood you have, it will last for a decade or more. Far longer than any plastic or metal furniture, which you might well have to replace every two years or so.

Acacia hardwood offers a hard wearing and comfortable alternative to teak. In fact, this type of wood is much like teak, as if you leave it untreated it will transform to a silvery grey color. However, it is best to treat all hardwood once or twice a year with suitable oil in order to maintain the warm tones of the timber.

Most people will have a garden patio furniture set of up-right chairs, loungers and a table or two or a nest of small tables. However, there are a few other pieces of furniture that will help you get more enjoyment from your garden. It is nice to be able to sit in the garden after it gets dark or when it is a bit nippy too. This can be achieved easily with a few accessories.

I suggest a patio heater, an electric mosquito killer and suitable lighting. Patio heaters are not dear any longer and a single upright propane heater will keep up to eight people warm, depending on their seating pattern. An electric mosquito killer will usually keep a whole garden clear. In fact, some will keep a quarter of an acre or more clear of flying insects. These two items may provide enough light for you, but is best to have a few spots to highlight a plant in bloom or to read by.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with commercial patio heaters.
