Lawnmower Buying Guide
As summer rolls around it’s time to think about all aspects of gardening, including keeping the lawn short, healthy and green. Part of achieving this is by having the right lawnmower for your garden. There are so many out there to choose from, so how do you know what’s right for you? Before you make a big investment on your new mower, take a look at the differences between the mowers available to decide what’s perfect for you.
Cylinder Lawnmower. The first type of lawnmower is the cylinder which is preferred by most professionals. This type of mower has blades that cut against a fixed blade for a very close, very sharp cut. Because of this, cylinder mowers are best suited to professional lawns and golf courses that need a very manicured, close-cut finish. They do not work well on uneven lawns, so if you go for this type of mower, make sure your lawn is completely flat and even.
Rotary Lawnmower. This mower is more common in most family homes. The finish is not as neat as a cylinder mower, but they are more rugged and cut easily through most grass. The blades cut like scythes and can often be adjusted according to how long or short you want the grass. The blades make it great for cutting all types of lawns, so if you have hills, weeds or very thick grass, this is the type of lawnmower you will want to consider purchasing.
Hover Mowers. The third lawnmower that is popular with families is the hover lawnmower. These mowers work by floating above the lawn while the sharp blades rotate for a close cut. They are much more maneuverable than the other two mowers, and easy to store away when finished due to the lightweight design. They are also much less expensive.
Electric or Gasoline? Once you know what type of mower you want, you will then need to decide whether you want a gas or electric one. Each has its benefits and drawbacks, which you will need to take into consideration. With the common gas-powered mower, you get the benefit of having more power, no trailing cords and better performance overall. However, they are heavier, harder to store and pollute. Electric mowers are much cleaner and simpler to maintain and very easy to push around. However, they cannot cut through damp grass and they need an electrical source close by.
Other Considerations. When shopping for your next lawnmower, there are some other considerations to keep in mind. For example, do you want to collect grass clippings? If so, you’ll need a grass collection box. Consider getting a clear viewing box so you know when to empty the clippings. If you want to get the lawn cut quickly, go for a wider mower. If you want a striped-effect, look for mowers with a rear roller that flattens the grass in one direction.
