Going Easy On The Use Of Water While Landscaping
The world is becoming more aware of the scarcity and fragility of this precious resource, and worldwide we are being urged to conserve water. Over consumption of water is driving the price of this natural resource up every day Saving water in the garden is not a difficult task, and doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
Mulch maintains the quality of many plants. Mulch allows for soil to maintain its nutrients and moisture. Dead organic matter can cover exposed soil. For gardens that lack natural organic matter, local nurseries can provide necessary items to fertilize a garden.
Plants that retain moisture are a great way to save water. Indigenous plants that easily adapt to current environments are easier to maintain. They are familiar with certain climate areas and require less water different times of year. Saving water can create a more inviting garden to animals.
Slowly eliminating ‘foreign’ or invader plant species will also cut down on watering. Foreign plants need an adequate amount of water to survive. Plants not suited for current conditions weaken and kill near by plants. A single species of unwanted plants can quickly reproduce and take over other plant species. Replace them with indigenous plants.
Watch when you water. The chance of evaporation of water is reduced when gardens are watered without the sun present. Watering in the evening reduces the amount of burnt leaves and grass. Avoid watering plants at night to preserve life and keep roots from freezing over. If you have an irrigation system with a timer, make sure you change it with each season to make sure you don’t waste water. Set a timer to save water in rainy seasons.
Collecting rainwater in a water tank can reduce water consumption. Install grey water recycling systems to reduce waste. Small things like pouring the water into a jug until it has heated up and using it to water indoor plants can make a huge difference to your water consumption.
Reducing water consumption in a garden is the easiest task in preserving water. Introduce some of the ideas mentioned here, and watch your water utilities bill gradually shrink.
