Adding Value To Your Home With Outdoor Shading

A number of options are available to those who are thinking of increasing the value of a house: think renovation, improvement, or structural addition. The renovation process can entail something as simple as repainting a wall to ripping out old kitchen cabinets and installing new ones. Improvements encompass anything from altering the layout of a bathroom to knocking down walls to increase space. The last option, addition, entails putting new structures into or onto the house.

Structural addition is often very expensive because of the extensive modifications that take place for the existing building, as well as creation of new materials. It also demands a real investment in labor, whether for the homeowner and his or her friends, or for the contractors who are hired for the job. A smaller structure is more manageable.

A smaller structural addition we will consider here are all the products that are grouped under the category of outdoor shades. One of the benefits of these shades is that they are a compromise between interior and exterior improvements. Outdoor shades are strictly built on the exterior premises and should complement the yardscape, yet they add more livable space for the residents of the house who can now spend time outside without fear of excess sun or rain exposure.

The following are some of the most popular outdoor shades used by people for adding usable space and increasing the value of a home.

Canopies are tent-like structures. There are two parts to the tent-like configuration of a canopy: a metallic scaffolding and a piece of canopy material that is stretched over it. The shading fabric almost always is affixed over the roofing to shield against direct sunlight but the side-walls may be omitted. Side-walls hamper air circulation, but such problems can be remedied by ensuring presence of window flaps and opposing entrances to the canopy.

An exterior awning can be thought of as a permanent shade, the attachment location usually being over a window or entrance. Residential awnings have seen a wave of technological advancement in recent decades. One can purchase motorized and retractable awnings that are responsive to remote control. The low end awnings are configured with retraction mechanism in a hand-powered set-up, manipulated by a lever or lateral-arm set-up. Pricier awnings are configured with motorized retraction.

Almost all outdoor shades are designed to stop nearly all light. Pergolas were created with a different purpose. Instead of stretching out a piece of fabric, the wooden struts of a pergola raise up wood slats that block only a portion of the sun. Dwarf versions of pergolas are also available. They are sometimes called arbors, and are less complicated to set up but cannot accommodate many people. Instead, they are signs for foot paths.
