A Tool Farmers Are Grappling For

After years of innovation, farm equipment designers have created a multipurpose grapple that efficiently accomplishes user’s trying tasks.

The hydraulic grapple rake, mounted on a dirt bucket by either a bolt-on method or welding, allows tractors the ability to pick up both heavy-sized loads and small debris with the same tool.

An Adaptable Tool

Dusty L. Weiss, of Construction Associates of Spokane Inc., ordered the grapple for the company’s tractor in June 2009, and said it’s a great innovative tool for the company’s everyday needs.

“I recently had to remove materials from the company’s driveway,” Weiss said. “Although I could have removed it myself, it would have been extremely inefficient; the bucket grapple allowed me to quickly accomplish the task.”

Whether the task is agriculture or demolition oriented, Weiss advises the use of the bucket grapple for those looking for an economically efficient solution.

Yet, Weiss made a few recommendations on how the bucket grapple’s design could be improved.

His attachment is 36 inches across and weighs approximately 200 lbs., an attribute which hinders the amount of weight feasibly carried per load. “Most tractor users find themselves engaging in more than they can handle,” Weiss said. “By lessening the weight of the attachment, you could pick up larger loads and improve productivity.”

Improving the Attachment

Colville, WA.-based AnBo Manufacturing has recently created a hybrid of the bucket grapple that allows a user to carry the weight that is required – with poise and ease.

Duane S. Kaler of Chattaroy, WA, bought his bucket grapple from AnBo in April 2009, and has been impacted by its usefulness.

“We recently purchased a 41-acre spread and needed an attachment that could effectively clean up brush, hay and other small materials,” Kaler said.

Kaler said his 72-inch bucket grapple – bolted securely in place – is perfect for accomplishing these various tasks.

“Although the bolt-on method is handy for removal purposes, I don’t ever plan to take it off,” Kaler said. “It’s just such a convenient tool.”

The AnBo Bucket Grapple comes custom-sized for most buckets, and is designed exclusively with forward-raking tines that make raking feasible in both a backward and forward motion.

“No more manual shoveling for me – the AnBo bucket Grapple works great for minuscule tasks such as these, along with many more!”

Now Built for Brawn

The AnBo bucket Grapple is uniquely made of AR400, a steel with almost two time the Brinnell rating as that of T1, allowing the grapple to be lighter in weight, yet stronger. Furthermore, the grapple can now handle larger payloads without bending the tines because of the new tensile strength of the metal – 50 percent greater than T1.

Jim Gurnea, owner of 160 acres of land in Ione, WA., said this steel is crucial in making the AnBo Bucket Grapple so beneficial and unequalled.

“Anytime you can reduce weight and maintain strength it’s a good thing,” Gurnea said. “Fortunately, the steel the AnBo Bucket Grapple is designed with allows for both.”

Gurnea previously worked for a steel company, and believes the AnBo attachment is exactly what an agriculture worker is searching for. “Although AR400 is ‘tougher steel’ for the designer to work with, it aids in creating a light weight tool with the ability to hold heavy items,” Gurnea said. “A hydraulic cylinder creates less mass to move – what a good idea!”

Furthermore, Gurnea said it’s unnecessary to develop a strapping or chain system with for the attachment; the grapple holds materials safely in place.

“Ultimately, whether it’s the middle of November or March, the AnBo Bucket Grapple is a beneficial tool to own,” Gurnea said.
